SF Weekly’s Fourth Annual DRINK Event was held at The Old Mint in San Francisco on March 7, 2014. There were 800+ guests and 40+ vendors.
This is the first large event that I planned. I worked closely with two of my coworkers to make this SOLD OUT event fun for all of our guests and clients! Working essentially without a budget makes larger events much more difficult, but we were able to pull it off. We agreed to rent the venue, and have a DJ in exchange for trade advertisements in our publication.
Like any large (open bar) event, we ran into some problems. Thankfully, guests were oblivious to these behind-the-scenes glitches and were able to enjoy the event. These mishaps consisted of a couple of spilled drinks, some problems with the guest list, and missing ballots for the cocktail contest. One of the most important qualities of a successful event planner is being RESOURCEFUL. We were able to prevent these problems from becoming a lot worse by thinking on our toes and coming up with a plan to fix them.
During these “pitfalls”, guests sampled beer, wine, and spirits and were educated about the characteristics that make each brand unique. They also sampled from a number of products/cocktails, small bites, live entertainment, including DJ Cosmic Amanda of BFF.fm, and voted on a cocktail competition.
